Jonathan Burton

Position:Defence Communications UK Team Leader
Joined 3SDL:April 2008

Background:

I am a Manufacturing Engineer by trade and now a Chartered Engineer. Following a stint as a development engineer within the Norwegian firm Norsk Hydro, I joined the MOD graduate engineer and science scheme. My early MOD career involved technical and project management posts working on Jaguar Avionics, Typhoon manufacturing and Artillery shell and rocket development. Latterly in my MOD career, I moved into TDL IPT with responsibility for the integration of Link 16 and VMF into Tornado GR4 and Harrier GR9 as well as supporting the JDN Backbone programme. I joined 3SDL in February 2008 where I provide technical acquisition support to a range of UK and European TDL and communications programmes.

Specialist Skills:

My specialist consultancy area is technical acquisition support. My main interest and drive is in working with clients to help them procure equipment and services that meet their need. This can include concepts and requirements development, tender documentation, technical assessments and advice as well as system testing.

With over 7 years experience of working as a technical manager within the UK MOD Defence Equipment and Support organisation and 3 years as a consultant I have developed a strong technical awareness of multi-link integration, interoperability issues for tactical platforms, complex system development and integration, Artillery weapon system technology, Air/Land integration, Combat Identification technology and the exploitation of military and civilian identification technologies.

Personal:

I am married with one young son and enjoy everything outdoors including snowboarding, mountain biking, walking, climbing and running (not that I have time to do all of these).
