Over the last 10 months, and just below the radar, 3SDL has been providing specialist Air Defence and Air Command & Control support to Indra Defence Systems in Spain. 3SDL has been helping Indra with their first ever competitive tender in the UK MOD market - ADEWS/056 for the supply and support of a Deployable Long-range Air Defence Radar System for the RAF.
3SDL guided Indra through the complexities of the UK MOD’s EoI, DPQQ and ITT procurement processes, mapping Indra’s capability and expertise against requirements for safety, quality, technical ability and an extremely challenging delivery timeline. Indra’s proposal for the RAF was the latest iteration of the 5th Generation LTR-25 Deployable Air Defence Radar from the proven Lanza family of radars – developed and built in-house by Indra at Torrejon and operated worldwide for over 30 years. The LTR-25 production facility already delivers radars to the Spanish Air Force, NATO and other non-European customers and Indra were able to offer the UK an immediately available, low-risk and technically-proven capability. Against strong competition, Indra’s LTR-25 radar and support package was selected as the preferred solution by the MoD’s Air Defence and Electronic Warfare Systems Delivery Team, with the award of a 30 month contract in February 2019.
Having supported Indra through this competition, 3SDL is now assisting the Company with the delivery of the LTR-25 into RAF service. 3SDL’s technical and operational expertise in the UK defence market is being used by Indra across project delivery plans, Air Defence and Air Command and Control capability integration, acceptance testing, UK MOD compliant operator and maintenance training, Military Aviation Authority approval schemes and security. Also included are specialist 3SDL services in cyber vulnerability assessments and mitigations and the production of a full Risk Management Accreditation Document Set for the LTR-25. 3SDL’s technical support to Indra is being led by Graeme ‘Spotter’ Harris, who has almost 30 years of RAF experience with radar and C2 programmes, including tours with the RAF’s No1 Air Control Centre (1ACC) at RAF Scampton, the likely home for the new LTR-25.
