Link 16 Terminal

Success Story

UK MOD: PES
Client: UK MOD
Contract Date: 2009-Present

3SDL Problem Evaluation Services (PES) delivers key support to all of the UK’s Link 16 users. It also distributes vital network designs via its Malvern-based servers to UK and allied units worldwide. Link 16 is arguably the most widely employed classified tactical communications system ever developed, with NATO planning to use it out to 2045.

There are now over forty nations involved, bi-annually sharing problems and prioritising updates. We manage UK engagement in this process. Link 16 automatically exchanges mission-critical information securely in near-real-time. Effective communication relies on every nation’s participant following precise pre-agreed sets of plans and instructions. The success of the network also relies on the complex software embedded in the host platform system.

PES involves the facilitation of online UK user communities. We host a Collaborative Working Environment (CWE) holding over 20 years of the UK’s corporate Link 16 knowledge which is accessible to both UK Government and Industry users. PES also involves technical support to Link 16 meetings in the UK and across NATO and other nations.

We won the PES contract in an open competition against other data link specialists, including Lockheed Martin and QinetiQ. We have been awarded a contract extension due to the operationally critical nature of our support. We are currently helping the customer to better understand its future requirements and are well placed to win any future competition for PES services.

The NMS Development and Sustainment Review Board (NDSRB) is compelling evidence of how 3SDL can export PES-like services to other nations while promoting international collaboration.
